Tourist for the morning

17th December 2014

I’ve lived in London all my life but don’t think I could ever run out of things to explore. Waaaaaay back in July after I discovered you could climb up the Elizabeth Towers and view Big Ben (the bell at the top of the tower) i signed myself up. Due to high demand I wasn’t able to get a place till December but that day came last week.

I took the morning off work and started my day off with a spot of yoga followed by hot chocolate and avo on toast at Le Pain Quotidien. Their menu is super vegan friendly at the moment with lots of options all clearly marked, plus a Christmas menu.

Fuelled up I took a leisurely stroll along the Thames…

On to Westminster.

Unfortunately photos in are not permitted anywhere in the Elizabeth Towers and out of respect I was more than happy to comply. It certainly makes the experience more magical if you can’t Google images of it first. Our guide was really informative, covering not only the history of the building and the bell, but also how the clock mechanism is maintained today. The tours are timed so that you actually get to hear Big Ben chime and you also get to see the views from the top.

{ I’m still excited about the fact I was behind those clock faces! }

If you are interested in climbing the tower you need to contact your local MP and ask them to arrange a tour (which is free and only to UK residents), however our tour guide did mention they would be shut for refurbishment sometime next year. You can find more details about the tour here.
