Veganuary

Veganuary

Well, we are already a week and a bit into February but I think a roundup of (probably the most successful ever) Veganuary is definitely required. ‘Intense’ is definitely the word that springs to mind when I think back on the whirlwind that was last month. Veganism exploded across restaurants like never before but also spread through supermarkets like a tidal wave.

I, a hardened vegan of 10 years was overwhelmed at the sheer quantity of product announcements, launches and openings filling my social media feed every day.

So here’s what happened:

♥ Dough Society – after a good year on the scene and a name change, Dough Society opened London’s first vegan doughnut shop in Hackney. Word has it they are regularly selling out.

♥ Wagamama & CookDaily – after trialing several really popular vegan options at their Noodle Lab in Dean St, Wagas collaborated with Cook Daily and produced Cookmama which is currently still available at Cook Daily Shoreditch and Wagamama Dean St. King also announced he finally has a cookbook deal.

♥ Temple of Seitan – opened their second location in Camden on the very last day of January – well-played guys 🙂

♥ The Vuger Co – after numerous successful pop-ups announced their first bricks and mortar store to open in Shoreditch in March.

♥ Purezza – a vegan pizza restaurant in Brighton revealed they would be opening another branch in Camden.

♥ What The Pitta – announced third branch opening this month. Where? 3 guesses…Camden! Let’s see someone try to steal that sign. 😆

♥ Arancini Bros – 18 days into their temporary switch for Veganuary they decided to turn their Old Street branch 100% vegan.

♥ By Chloe – impending opening of new Covent Garden branch was announced.

♥ Moving Mountains – US B12 ‘bleeding’ burger to become available at Mildreds Dalston this month.

♥ Vegan menu options galore – restaurants all over London jumped on the Veganuary bandwagon proudly advertising their special menus – Harvey Nichols, All Bar One, Comptoir V, Firezza, All Star Lanes, Aubane, jackfruit wraps at Starbucks, coffee shops offering more plant-based milk options.

♥ Supermarkets – there was a huge hoo-ha down the ‘vegetable aisle’ in Tesco which you can read more about here but other excitement came from announcements such as Quorn vegan ham and chicken slices (available in Sainsbury’s now), vegan Cornettos (Sainsbury’s this month), Goodlife vegan frozen pizza (Sainsbury’s next March) plus vegan and Ben & Jerry’s now also available in Sainsburys and Waitrose.

♥ Vegan pubs –  Islington’s The Blacksmith and the Toffeemaker decided to go vegan followed by the opening of 100% vegan The Spread Eagle in Hackney boasting Club Mexicana in residence.

♥ There was an Oatly Barista shortage #youknowitsveganuarywhen
