Dirty Vegan, Shoreditch

Last month I had the pleasure of testing out Dirty Bones‘ new venture Dirty Vegan – a vegan pop-up at their Shoreditch location.

They make American comfort food but have taken some of their most popular items and veganised them. I’d never heard of them before and it looks like this is their first time offering vegan options.
The menu was quite extensive and even included veganising 2 of their existing cocktails. The super cute The Fab (with a candy rim) and The Dirty Vina Colada with whipped coconut cream.

The venue was really cute and in typical Shoreditch style, with laid-back tunes playing in the background making it perfect for catching up with my dining partner.

Now bearing in mind I’d had a huge Dishoom for lunch that day. I managed to do a pretty good job of working my way through the vast array of dishes.
I’d say their ‘show stopper’ would be the cauliflower and waffle. Not something you initially would think of as working well together but the sweet and savoury was spot on – maple syrup and fresh grilled lemon to squeeze over the waffle and the light crispy batter coating the cauliflower.

If you aren’t a fake meat fan this is the ideal menu (also for those dipping their toes into veganism) nothing was overtly trying to be something it wasn’t. A couple of the dishes didn’t work so well for me but overall I found the menu to be a good illustration of how humble plants can be made into interesting vegan dishes. They were also very open to feedback so we made sure to do just that.

My other highlights were the pardon peppers, gem lettuce salad (another sweet and savoury delight), mac and cheese balls and the aubergine wings. Also, their sauce game is on point, most dishes were accompanied with punchy, flavourful sauces and dressings which really elevated the dishes.

Many thanks to Dirty Bones for the complementary tasting, the menu is back on for the month of May so I suggest you get yourself down there 🙂
