Blah blah blah, Shepherds Bush

24 January 2010

On Friday night I went to see Brett Anderson, former Suede lead singer, perform at the Shepherd Bush Empire with some friends.  I thought I would make the most of it and wear my sexy new berry boots from ethical wares.

sexy vegan boots!

I ordered these boots just before xmas, hoping they would arrive in time for new years eve and they did.  Unfortunately, despite the advice on site, I ordered the wrong size you need to order one size larger in these boots.  I sent the boots back and then the snow came.  Ethical wares is based in Wales and the got snowed in.  However as soon as operations were up and running again they sent me my new boots that fit like a glove.  Bearing in mind I am an do I have to change out of my trainers type girl and these babies have a heel I was pleasantly suprised that I wore them all evening in absolute comfort.

In Sherpherd’s bush there is a veggie/vegan restaurant that has been open over 20 years, Blah Blah Blah.  On Friday I convinced my friends that a pre gig dinner was in order and I had the perfect venue in mind.  We didn’t book at table but I would recommend doing so, they were booked up and were sending lots of drop in diners away.  We had got there early enough to swipe their last table – a downstairs booth in the corridor.  It was like private dining sitting away from the main restaurant and the waiters couldn’t avoid us either as they had to go passed us up and down the stairs.

The restaurant is decorated in a moroccan and has a nice cafe vibe.  This is created by the BYO nature of the place and the very friendly staff.  There is an news agents opposite which must do a roaring trade from diners, like us, who didn’t realise it was a BYO before arrival.  Although their wine organisation has a lot to be desired with everything thrown on to the shelves together.

To eat I had the tempura veggies followed by the curry.  Both were good.  The meal came to £55 for 3 of us with 2 starters, 3 mains, the corkage on two bottles of wine & service charge.  Reasonable indeed.  A short time ago Mits and I visited this restaurant on a Saturday afternoon to drop off some cupcakes and muffins.  It was closed so we dropped some leaflets through the door with a note.  On Friday, when we went upstairs to pay I saw the to happy vegan leaflets by the til, what nice people.  Based on this, good food, service and friendly staff I would recommend you pay them a visit.

But the biq question is…. how was the gig?

I was one of Sasha’s party at the restaurant and Brett Anderson gig on Friday night. Anderson’s new direction towards a more mature, pastoral sound has worked well and produced a haunting new album. He sounds more comfortable with himself these days – the Brett Anderson of old singing songs about ice or crystals would’ve taken us on trawl through the seedier side of life but now they are actually songs about nature.

He retains the same fey stage presence and, augmented, by a four piece band serves up a good set. There are no backward glances through inclusion of Suede songs and the gig is, probably, all the better for it by allowing Anderson free rein with his new material. Recommended

Thanks Andy. I always thought Suede were a very good live band, helped by Anderson’s amazing stage presence, and I’m pleased to hear his new stuff is equally good. I will seek it out and have a listen myself. :)
