Mayrhofen, Austria

September 2011

This year being a vegan wasn’t going to dominate my holiday choices.  It usually does because I like food, especially eating it, so I make sure that there are plenty of vegan options available. Nom nom nom.  (Previous holiday destinations have included New York, Portland or self catering in Spain.)

Paignton, Devon

16th Juy 2011

There I was minding my own business meandering beachwards amongst the chip shops, greasy cafes and kebabarys when a sign caught my eye – 100% Health it declared! Was it some kind of trap I wondered, to capture city living vegan such as myself? However, apart from a girl from the neighbouring takeout joint thrusting her double battered chips upon Mr Ikeda we made it in unharmed. (more…)

Totnes, Devon

14th July 2011

No trip to Devon is ever complete without an outing to see some animals. Last year we visited the National Seal Sanctuary and The Donkey Sanctuary. Living in London obviously it is a little harder to find similar places. The closest alternative are city farms which have rescued animals but I am yet to find one that doesn’t also breed animals for sale as meat. (more…)

Dartmouth, Devon

11th July 2011

We are very lucky that my in-laws have a place in Devon which means we go down there once a year. However, google ‘vegan Torquay’ and prepare to be underwhelmed. Thankfully Torquay is close to some other more vegan friendly places that are worthy of their own fourthcoming blogs. (more…)

Sri Lanka (part 2)

After 9 days travelling around the beautiful island of Sri Lanka and seeing many interesting sites (read about it here), it was time for some R & R at the beach!  I (Sasha) had decided to head to the south of Sri Lanka for this.  Near Galle there is a hippy town called Unawatuna – sounds pretty darn perfect to me.

Sri Lanka (part 1)

In November 2010 after much deliberation I (Sasha) went on a two week holiday to Sri Lanka.  As it happens it turned out to be one of the best holidays I have ever been on and if I have known that was going to be the case at the start then I would have booked earlier leaving more time to tweak the itinerary.   Having hindsight rather than foresight is a cross we must all bear and the holiday still turned out GREAT!

Portland – Eating Out

I found vegan food as soon as I landed at JFK all clearly labelled and calling me.  My word what a nice change. Please see soba noodles below – very nice indeedy.

As you can see from my last Portland blog (Portland – Eating In) I made the most of new and interesting ingredients I found in the supermarket (mainly daiya cheese!) and ate in a lot. But in the name of research I also managed to eat out as well.  I did this for you!

Portland – Eating In

There is no denying that having self catering accommodation on holiday in the US can be a good thing.  In New York that option wasn’t available to us so we ate which was good as there are a lot of vegan restaurants in NYC but it costs a lot.  With self catering accommodation you can taste local produce bought from the farmers market ;-) or supermarket and  cook up some tasty treats.

Portland’s vegan mall

What constitutes a vegan mall?  I would say it is a small gathering of vegan retailers?  More than one vegan retailer in a place……..  Imagine that.  Da da daaaaaaa….behold Portland’s vegan mall which was bought to my attention by the kind and considerate @veganmonkey.  Thank you!

Portland state farmers market

Can you judge a city by its farmers market?  I think so.  In London there are a lot of farmers markets, some small some big.  Near me at home there is a small one in Blackheath (15-20 stalls) and one of the largest around, Borough market (a lot of stalls!).

Dial Zero for Vegan

2nd September 2010

A lot of the time a vegan’s best plan is to be prepared. I contacted our hotel in advance to enquire about their capabilities for catering for me and it all sounded hopeful. (more…)

Food To Go

26th August 2010

The last time I travelled abroad since turning vegan almost 3 years ago was to visit my family in Japan. Going to another country can be a challenge when you have to explain (there is no single word for vegan in Japanese) and get your dietry requirements understood. (more…)

Before the obligatory blogs about my food on holiday, here are some pics of the beautiful beach and sunsets in Negril, Jamaica: (more…)

New York (part 2)

24-29th March

After part 1 you can imagine I was feeling pretty full.  I shared a vegan pizza from the vegan bakery on 8th (between 1st & Ave A) which cost $5 a slice.  This bakery is open 7 days and offers a wide array of sweet & savoury items.  There is a small amount of seating inside but it is mainly a take out place.  The bakery is currently 85% organic but is aiming for 100%.  The owner has really investigated his ingredients well.
