Demuths Review, Bath

9 December 2010

“Hey mum, what do you want to do for your birthday this year?”

“I would like to go to a Christmas fayre in bath”

Oh no really? I hope its good thinks Sasha

Happy Birthday mum, here is a very nice coffee & walnut cupcake to celebrate your bon anniversaire. “Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear mooooooother……”

I haven’t been to a Christmas fayre since I lived in Luxembourg nearly 20 years ago.  Eeeek I am getting old!  We used to go over the border into Germany to check out the Christmas fayre and drink gluvine.  What fun!

Bath is an  hour and a half from London Paddington on a fast train.  Hold on. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. The snow brushed countryside made picturesque scenery on the journey down and should have been a warning as to how cold it was going to be when we got there!

Not to worry first stop was lunch at Demuths – a posh veggie restaurant in Bath.

It took us awhile to find the restaurant (when you go take a map!)  It turns out the restaurant is by the market so we did a lap whilst waiting for a free table (book a table at the restaurant if you go!)  What a fantastic Christmas market!  I bought more for me than anyone else.  Tee hee hee.  The art & crafts in the market were really nice and reasonably priced.  It puts you in the Christmas spirit. T’is the season to be jolly.

Back to the food.  There is a set menu available – two courses for £14.50.  Yum!

I opted for the chickpea fritters followed by the nut roast – my first this Christmas.  The chickpea fritters were on a bed of spicy sauce & topped with a lemon sauce accompanied by a yoghurt dip.  It was nice, I would say 7.5/10.  The nut roast came in a sausage shape coated with sesame seed, parsnip mash & veggies,  It was really good – 8/10 from me.

The birthday girl had a vegan lentil soup to start and we are ignoring her main dinner as it was veggie and not vegan!

I have been going to Demuths for many years and it is a wonderful place (far better than a veggie restaurant in nearby Bristol that seems to get a lot of accolades but I find to be all style and no substance and seriously lacking in vegan options). Demuths deserves to be much better known and I highly recommend visiting it if in the area.

By the way, that toy you have pictured above, is that real feathers attached to it? I must say I tend to avoid products with feathers as they tend to come from the slaughterhouse.

As well as great food the staff were really friendly and helpful.

There are no feathers on the toy, I agree with you & wouldn’t choose something with feathers on it. I think that the leafage look feathery in the photo that’s all.
