How To Feed A Cold

14th October 2009

So Mother is now living with us and when she developed a bad cold after 2 days, I kick started operation ‘cold obliteration’. I don’t look forward to being ill at the best of times, but since we have stall outside in the increasing chilly weather this Saturday, I wanted to make sure I was protected.

How do you feed a cold? Well in the Ikeda household you stuff it full of ’super foods’, here’s a sample of what we have been filling up on:

Stir fry on wholemeal toast containing among other things: red pepper which has more vitamin C than an orange, wheat grass which is meant to flush out accumulated toxins in the body and leeks which are thought to improve the immune system.

Seeded ciabatta: with harissa made from chillis to combat nasal congestion, anti pasti containing slivers of garlic which has antibiotic properties, and avocado with zinc for stimulating the immune system.

Green tea Mother tells me is made from different ‘grades’ of the plant, matcha (leaves made into powder) is the best part which is why it is so expensive. It is also full of anti-oxidants.

Yet another immune system booster is beetroot (and it also lowers high blood pressure). I simple boiled and peeled it simultaneously turning my kitchen purple, then sliced and drizzled some organic cider vinegar over.  I also came across this LOVEly website if you need some more ideas for what to do with it. You can however eat it raw, try grating it and adding to a salad or sandwich.

Well how did we do? I have as yet to develop any cold symptoms and Mother who normally suffers for at least a week was showing improvement after the second day. Was it down to my healing vegetables? I know what I think ^.~
