Visit Neil Young’s exhibition of farmed animal portraits: ‘You, like me’ (3-31 October 2010) at First Out Café bar, London
1st September 2010
“If man is not to stifle his human feelings, he must practise kindness towards animals, for he who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.” Immanuel Kant, German Philosopher
My name is Neil Young. I am a photographer motivated by a love for animals,
especially farmed animals. Right now I am organising my first solo show ‘You, like me’ throughout October 2010 at First Out Café bar by Tottenham Court Road in central London , UK . The exhibition is intimate portraits of farmed animals that live outside intensive agricultural systems, primarily in animal sanctuaries.
My exhibition explores the relationship between us and farmed animals, given how little contact most of us have with them. What is it like for us to look an individual cow, sheep, pig or chicken in the eye? What feelings, memories and imagination may this spark in us? And how do we imagine farmed animals experience the world?
Come and see what happens for you.
My work challenges the gendered view that farmed animals are dull, dumb, domestic (feminine) creatures of little interest compared to the (masculine) excitement and danger of studying animals in the wild. As ever, the reality is more complicated. Domesticated animals have complex emotional worlds, for example, pigs crave affection and are easily depressed if isolated or denied the chance to play with each other and chickens can anticipate future events and exercise self-control (bless their dear hearts).
And, in case you need another reason to visit, all profits from sales of prints at my exhibition will go to animal welfare organisations such as Animal Aid (hyperlink to http://www.animalaid.org.uk) and VIVA! (hyperlink to http://www.viva.org.uk).
Please tell friends, family and other people you think would be interested in my exhibition, including sending this blog by email and posting it on facebook.
