World Vegan Day – 65 Years of Vegan by Tony Bishop-Weston of Foods for Life

I thought last year was going to be hard to beat having kicked off with Benjamin Zephaniah (Vegan Poet) on Mastermind, Sir Paul McCartney on News at 10 and then Oprah Winfrey going vegan for a month.

This year there seems general public acceptance … well yes for a better healthier population and planet we really should be vegan but (main excuse) it’s just a little too difficult to do it all the time.

Part time vegans are crawling out of the wood work like shafts of light breaking through the wooden planks nailed to our windows.

All we have to do now is show everyone how easy it is (and fun)

We all know that these days there is very little you have to give up as a vegan – if you want chicken, beef, sausages, pate, caviar, cheese, ice cream, haggis, chorizos, yoghurt, whipped cream, chocolate, prawns, marshmallows – you got it! Someone somewhere has a vegan version of it and if it’s not in the shops then you can order it on line or pick it up at The Vegan Festival.

And that’s the thing. For years we just had the London Vegan Festival, now they are all over the country.

The latest to be announced is in Croydon home of The Croydon Vegetarian Society established in 1886 and unfortunately winners of the crown to London’s unhealthiest borough.

In Croydon’s legendary Fairfield Halls on World Vegan Day Sunday 1st November there will be a vegan fayre and celebration of Veganism’s 65th Birthday party.

A family fun day celebrating health and sustainability, fair trade and ethical living.

This festival joins a list of other new Eco Veggie Fayres in Hove near Brighton, Reading, East Midlands and soon possibly Manchester and Glasgow.

All these present more opportunities to prove to Jane and Joe Public that veganism is anything but a life of self denial – it’s not denial it’s enlightenment but it most certainly is about life, all life, a life worth living.
