Amsterdam

April 2013

A few weeks ago I (Sasha) went to Amsterdam.  I haven’t been there for a while so I was really looking forward to see if anything had changed.  And when I say a while it has been about 17 years!

Morocco

March 2013

Morocco in march is marvelous, especially when its snowing in London!  I hadn’t read my travel guide before arriving so pretty much everything was a surprise and a very pleasant one at that.

Travelling Tips

Don’t you love to travel?  The excitement of  going somewhere new, experiencing a new culture, eating different food.  I love it and always have.  In my younger days I lived abroad in both France & Luxembourg.  After university I went backpacking into southern Africa, Australia & Malaysia.  My thirst for travel has never let up.  I always want to travel to a country I have never been too. For the second half of our holiday we hopped on a train bound for some New Jersey hospitality with the other half of the Ikeda family.

New York, USA

8th July 2012

It has been 9 years since our last visit to see Mr Ikeda’s family in America. I would say this is one place I never had any fear about being able to eat in, so not a snack did I bring with me.

We spent our first few days with the relatives of New York. They live in a very picturesque area of New York called Larchmont, a leafy suburb filled with beautiful houses.

Tokyo, Japan

16th June 2012

Tokyo has vegan restaurants a plenty but it is also BIG place, I had a few places listed to visit but in the end after all the travelling we had done, was happy to go where the wind took us.  I was really surprised to have two deliciously good meals at ‘regular’ Japanese restaurants, better than the salad and chips fare I have had to suffer on many occasion back in blighty. Arashiyama, Japan

12th June 2012

Shojin ryori is a traditional cuisine eaten by monks. Obviously an essential part of buddhism  is not to hurt another living creature, but because before the 20th century very little eggs and dairy were consumed in Japan this buddhist fare is actually entirely vegan. (more…)

Hiroshima, Japan

6th June 2012

Our first day in Hiroshima and we decided on a leisurely stroll through Hondori shopping arcade. Unfortunately this turned into not so leisurely when we tried to locate the Shanti Yoga Vegan Cafe which is nearby for lunch. Without going into the walking backwards and forwards, forwards and backwards and being given wrong directions by the locals we finally found it and I am really pleased to say it was worth it. St Austell – Eden Project

May 2012

I have never know that much about it except that I always wanted to go.  The Eden project has always sounded so interesting what with big biomes, rain forest and all in Cornwall.

Kyoto, Japan

2nd June 2012

We spent 3 days in Kyoto in the end, the first and last days of our trip, plus a trip to Arashiyama, seperate blog coming soon.

Our first day is also known as the day I accidentally stumbled across vegan donuts. I had planned to look for Doughnut Plant on the last day of the tour, but actually noticed it completely by accident on the way to board the Shinkansen at Tokyo station. I immediately bought myself the green tea soya doughnut on offer.

St Austell – FOOD

May 2012

It turns out that Kings Cross, platform 9 3/4 is not the only place you can leave London and go on an adventure. This I found out on a short break to Cornwall after a quick 4 hour journey from Paddington station.  When we hopped off the train at St Austell we were ready for a three night stay at the pier house, Charlestown.

Japan: Eating in

27th May 2012

My Obachan (auntie) lives in Saitama Prefecture about 1.5 hours from Tokyo station, most of meals I ate here were homemade or bought from the supermarket.

Gomoku zushi, pickled daion and seaweed with sisho

Cold noodles with raw bean sprouts, cucumber and avocado

Japan: Planning a trip

25th May 2012

I spent A LOT of time planning my trip to Japan this year. Baba decided she wanted to do a tour down south of Tokyo but I also wanted to visit the vegan places I could find in the areas we were stopping at. Just booking the hotels I had to take a day off work in the end, and getting my vegan hit list has been spread out over many evenings and weekends when I had a spare moment. (more…)

Brighton in Pictures

23rd March 2012

The main reason for going to Brighton last weekend was for Vegfest, but there are just some things you can not do when you are there. (more…)

Mayrhofen, Austria

September 2011

This year being a vegan wasn’t going to dominate my holiday choices.  It usually does because I like food, especially eating it, so I make sure that there are plenty of vegan options available. Nom nom nom.  (Previous holiday destinations have included New York, Portland or self catering in Spain.)

Paignton, Devon

16th Juy 2011

There I was minding my own business meandering beachwards amongst the chip shops, greasy cafes and kebabarys when a sign caught my eye – 100% Health it declared! Was it some kind of trap I wondered, to capture city living vegan such as myself? However, apart from a girl from the neighbouring takeout joint thrusting her double battered chips upon Mr Ikeda we made it in unharmed. (more…)

Totnes, Devon

14th July 2011

No trip to Devon is ever complete without an outing to see some animals. Last year we visited the National Seal Sanctuary and The Donkey Sanctuary. Living in London obviously it is a little harder to find similar places. The closest alternative are city farms which have rescued animals but I am yet to find one that doesn’t also breed animals for sale as meat. (more…)

Dartmouth, Devon

11th July 2011

We are very lucky that my in-laws have a place in Devon which means we go down there once a year. However, google ‘vegan Torquay’ and prepare to be underwhelmed. Thankfully Torquay is close to some other more vegan friendly places that are worthy of their own fourthcoming blogs. (more…)
