Itadakimasu
11th March 2010
Itadakimasu in Japanese is said before every meal, it kind of gives thanks to whoever prepared the meal and also notifies everyone that you are about to start eating! My marathon of dining out (which it scares me to say is still not over) was added to today by Itadaki Zen in King’s Cross. It’s only been open about a month and a half and sells organic vegan Japanese food.

For someone who is not familiar with Japanese food I can see the menu might be a little overwhelming, there is a lot of choice. Of course there is sushi, but I was also pleased to see there were more traditional dishes I recognised that you won’t find in your high street sushi chains.
In a moment of madness I thought I had not eaten enough this week already and so went for the set meal and Sash followed suit.

My menu selection

Sash's menu choice.
Everything looked so pretty and delicate and tasted wholesome, for certain items on the menu they even mention the associated health benefits from eating/drinking them. So are you ready? Here is what we had:

Itadaki tea - blended grain tea made with gluttonous rice, soya milk, brown sugar and pine nuts.

Yu-tofu

Vegetable kakiage tempura and potato salad.

I loved this! I think this came as an extra dish as it wasn't on our set menu. I think it's dengaku - tofu topped with miso.

Garnished sushi rice.
Not finished yet!

Pan fried vegetables, harumaki, inari and more!

Somen noodles with soya milk stock.

White sesame kanten jelly
I think I ruined it a little bit for myself by not saving myself all week for it, it’s definitely a bit special. We couldn’t finish everything (and felt really bad about it), we even wimped out and shared one dessert rather than having our allocated one each. The jelly was light and probably the perfect end to dinner, now would not be the time to have a big slice of cake! The Itadaki tea was lovely, Sash thought it would be ideal just before bed, it was almost like rice pudding once you got to the bottom of the cup.
I hope they do really well I love the concept ,organic and healthy yet hearty too. I will be back!
The dinner course and tea was around £25 (incl service).
